Class diary: Gifted Children (Session 16/12)

GIFTED CHILDREN

The topic of this session was Gifted Children. A guest speaker came to talk about these children and how we can improve their learning at school, how we can detect them, how we can handle them...

Gifted children are not usually noticed by teachers. There are many prejudices and myths about them, for example, many people believe that they are antisocial, which is not true. Although they may have "weird" interest they are normal kids with excellent qualities.

When they are raised in families with poor resources they are even more difficult to been noticed and their abilities are harder to foster. It is even more difficult to notice gifted girls because during their teenage years they normally want to be socially accepted and they do not want to attract the attention of their classmates. Some hints to notice them is the special ability they have to solve problems and their creativity to come up with solutions.

In order to foster diversity in the classroom, it is important to take them into account but the question is whether they should be given a specific education or not.
Regarding the legislation, there was discrimination in the past, both on the schools and in the parents' side. The role of the school is very important since they should carry different evaluations in order to test their abilities and aptitudes.

During their adolescence some problems may arise such as isolation, harassment, self- esteem problems... A low self- esteem, scholar failure, hyperactivity... may be hints to notice them, although this is not always certain.

Regarding the advancement of school levels in gifted children, it may be problematic too. They are kids and they need to be with classmates of the same age. They have the right to enjoy every stage of their life and we should not prevent them from living their teenage years with people of the same age.

Therefore, gifted children are normal children with excellent capacities. We as teachers must be able to recognise them in order to benefit them and in order to foster their aptitudes. We should help them to live a normal live without stigmata and limitations.
